Eastern Illinois University: Subtropical and Marine Ecology

This course will be an introduction to subtropical and marine ecology. The focal point of this course is an intensive one-week study abroad experience at Forfar Field Station on Andros Island in the Bahamas where students will be exposed to ecosystems (barrier, fringing, and patch reefs, tide pools, mangrove forest, subtropical forests, blue holes, etc.) that do not occur in east-central Illinois. They will observe subtropical plants and animals emphasizing marine fish and invertebrates in a variety of habitats including coral reefs (barrier, fringing, and patch reefs), turtle grass beds, oceanic blue holes, tidal pools and flats, mangrove and pine forests, and jungle-like coppices. Students will conduct research projects and also learn about conservation issues related to these habitats and the Bahamian culture.

AustraLearn and Murdoch University are pleased to offer a 3-week marine science program on one of the most pristine coral reefs in the world. The Ningaloo Reef is protected by the Ningaloo Marine Park and offers students an amazing location and a unique experience. The course is worth * 5 US credits * and covers three main areas: *Diversity and physical processes of WA marine habitats, with a focus on coral reef environments *Biodiversity of reef organisms *Biological processes, with a focus on coral reefs ecosystems *A series of 15 lectures will provide a physical and biogeographical background to WA coral reefs, WA reef biodiversity and details of key biological and ecological processes of coral reefs. Additional non-assessed lectures on data analysis and the Ningaloo Marine Park and other special lectures may be added or presented at Ningaloo Reef, depending on availability of guest lecturers; examples include indigenous speakers, government agency representatives and visiting researchers.

Students are placed in unpaid professional internships for academic credit, based on their course work, skills and personal interests. Internships are complimented by three classes on varying subjects. This program is offered to students of all majors at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, including international students.

The main focus of this study-abroad program is to focus on Italian cuisine and hospitality. Students study in a hands-on environment, engaging directly with the subjects of the courses. The course include 5 hours of Italian language study weekly, 5 hours of Italian Culture, Food and Art weekly, 6 hours of Italian cooking weekly which includes both lecture and practical lessons, and 5 hours of Italian Wine and Restaurant operations weekly. By the end of the course of study, the students attain a solid foundation in Italian culture, language, art, hospitality, and culinary arts. The course is complimented by two tours outside of Florence, one to vineyards in the region of Chianti which includes a tasting, and the other to the medieval town of Montepulciano with a visit to an award-winning vineyard for a tasting.

Lorenzo de Medici (LDM) is one of the largest and leading international schools of Italy, with centers in Florence, Rome, Tuscania, and Venice. LDM-Tuscania is an ideal setting for students who want to study Italian language and culture, art, culinary arts, archaeology, music-cinema-theatre, history, and more. Because of LDM's involvement with internationally-known film and music festivals, as well as contemporary film productions, it is also an excellent location for students interested in cinema. Tuscania is a lovely Italian town, built on a hilltop in 7th Century BC. Only about 8000 people live there. In addition to being one of the most picturesque settings, it is home to two of the most beautiful churches in Italy (St. Peter’s and Santa Maria Maggiore). The countryside surrounding Tuscania is part of a nature reserve, with one of the richest collections of archaeological remains in the world.

Mahidol University International College (MUIC) was established to deliver English-taught science and liberal arts programs that embody the finest standards possible to a diverse population of full-time students from Thailand and around the world. MINGLE for APICIUS: Cuisine, Italian Style

This three-week program is based in Florence, Italy, however begins with three days of touring in Rome. The course focuses the culinary traditions of Italy and Tuscany as well as a study of Italian wines. The students study in a hands-on fashion and classes included everything from traditional Italian baking and pastry, to local Tuscan culinary traditions to chocolate. The culinary traditions are complimented by visits to the great monuments and museums in both Rome and Florence, including the Vatican and St. Peters, the Accademia and the Uffizi. In addition to the culinary and wine classes as well as the visits to museums, the course also visits famous places such as Pisa, Montepulciano, Pienza and a wine-producer to see in person the production of so many of the products the students use in class. This in-depth study of Italian cuisine and wine as well as guided visits to museums and cities gives the students a well-rounded understanding of Italian culture.
