MINGLE for FUA: Italian Language, Art and Cuisine

This four-week program is dedicated to an intensive Italian Language Study and Italian literature. The students spend four days a week studying Italian language in the mornings followed by a lecture and discussion on Dante Aligheri in the afternoons. The course is complimented by several other activities, including a tour of the fresh food market with a professional chef who teaches about food culture in Italy, a cooking class with a professional chef teaching the students some of the famous recipes from the region, as well as a day trip to the charming hamlet city of San Gimignano and afternoon wine tasting at a local vineyard. Students who study Italian in Italy find that their studies are all the more rewarding as they are able to use their newly-attained knowledge on a daily basis, further developing their speaking skills.

MINGLE for FUA: Italian Art history from the Romans to the Renaissance to the Rococo

This four-week program is divided with 18 days of study based in Florence and the surrounding region with the last ten days of the program held in Rome. The course focuses on the greats of the Florentine Renaissance, from Giotto to Michelangelo, visiting the major monuments and museums in Florence and the surrounding areas. The trip then takes a jump back in time, basing the final ten days of study in Rome, focusing on both Classical Antiquity and its inspiration on the greats of the Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo. Apart from the multiple visits to museums, galleries, and monuments throughout the month of study, the program also includes a trip into the Tuscan country-side to visit Pienza, a city made famous by Pope Pius and Pecorino cheese as well as a visit to a famous vineyard in the region of Montepulciano. The students also participate in a cooking-class in Florence at a culinary arts and hospitality school.

This travel-study in Italy is open to all majors. We see the incredible highlights of Italy together and learn about history, culture, art and film. There is some free time in each city. Two orientation sessions in March. We don’t sit in a classroom in Italy. Academic work is online (WebCT) before or after travel. Students learn to think and write philosophically about their travel experiences and ideas. Independent project.

This course is divided into a three-week stay in Florence followed by the final week dedicated to study of the Italian south in Sicily. The mission of this program is to provide hands-on exposure to Italian Culinary traditions and techniques from Tuscany to Sicily. Students participate in classes ranging from Italian culinary history, Italian regional cuisine, Italian baking and pastry, pasta workshops, meal planning, and a study of the regional wines of Italy. Included in this program are several trips around central Italy including visits to: Parma to witness the production of the world-famous Parmiggiano Reggiano cheese, Modena to explore the production of true Aceto Balsamico of Modena, the famously beautiful town of Pienza which is famous for its production of Pecorino cheese, Montepulciano and a nearby award-winning vineyard. The fourth week of their program is run in Sicily, introducing the students to the varied culinary traditions and history of this beautiful land that is Italy.

This three-week course is designed to expose students to the heart of Tuscan and Italian culture. The course includes a study of Italian cuisine, wine, art and culture through a variety of different classes and visits. Students study Italian cuisine in classes that vary from a traditional summer menu to an ice-cream lab to a chocolate workshop based on the therapeutic principals of chocolate. They tour the fresh market with chefs as well as visit the famous museums of Florence such as the Uffizi and the Accademia. The course includes two unique visits, one to the canteen of an elementary school where the students have a chance to see just how children in Italy eat at school, the other is a dinner with a local Italian family, offering the students the opportunity to experience a true Italian family dinner. Several day-trips outside of the city are also included to places such as Pienza, Lucca and a visit to a winery.

The main focus of this study-abroad program is to focus on Italian cuisine and hospitality. Students study in a hands-on environment, engaging directly with the subjects of the courses. The course include 5 hours of Italian language study weekly, 5 hours of Italian Culture, Food and Art weekly, 6 hours of Italian cooking weekly which includes both lecture and practical lessons, and 5 hours of Italian Wine and Restaurant operations weekly. By the end of the course of study, the students attain a solid foundation in Italian culture, language, art, hospitality, and culinary arts. The course is complimented by two tours outside of Florence, one to vineyards in the region of Chianti which includes a tasting, and the other to the medieval town of Montepulciano with a visit to an award-winning vineyard for a tasting.

This three-week program is based in Florence, Italy, however begins with three days of touring in Rome. The course focuses the culinary traditions of Italy and Tuscany as well as a study of Italian wines. The students study in a hands-on fashion and classes included everything from traditional Italian baking and pastry, to local Tuscan culinary traditions to chocolate. The culinary traditions are complimented by visits to the great monuments and museums in both Rome and Florence, including the Vatican and St. Peters, the Accademia and the Uffizi. In addition to the culinary and wine classes as well as the visits to museums, the course also visits famous places such as Pisa, Montepulciano, Pienza and a wine-producer to see in person the production of so many of the products the students use in class. This in-depth study of Italian cuisine and wine as well as guided visits to museums and cities gives the students a well-rounded understanding of Italian culture.
