March 19, 2010Volunteer Abroad Programs – Education for the SoulVolunteering to work abroad can be an eye-opening and soul enriching experience. Available to anybody over the age of sixteen, and with no experience necessary, not only will you be involved in a valuable, ethical pastime, but you will learn far more about different cultures than you ever could from a studying a book or from within a tour bus. The experience that you gain will enhance your résumé for sure. However, you will gain far more in life skills than you could ever contemplate. Imagine living in Africa and teaching a class of children how to speak English, or preserving the habitat of turtles in the Indian Ocean. Consider how you would be contributing to our eco-system when planting trees in Costa Rica, or working on environmental projects in Chile, Cambodia or Australia. Volunteer projects cover animal rescue and working with the physically and mentally disabled the world over – and you can be a part of it. All the schemes mentioned above are ongoing, and you can volunteer at a time most convenient to yourself. The period for which you volunteer is flexible as well – normally, it is from two weeks to twelve weeks – and, during this time, you are living with a host family or housed in an apartment close to the project, meeting the locals and bringing something to their lives as well. You will be glad to hear that volunteer abroad programs are not all work, work, work. Most schemes offer excursions allowing you to explore your destination and create new friendships with people that you would never have met. Plus there is always an on-the-ground presence for your peace of mind. Different projects have different fee structures and some include flights, others do not. Check out some of the options available via the Internet, and remember – all you need is enthusiasm, an open mind and a genuine desire to help.
